W. A. Werning

W. A. Werning is an ICC-certified electrical inspector and is a certified electrical instructor through the National Center of Construction Education and Research and through the Texas State Board for Educator Certification. Currently, he teaches the Electrical Code Examination and Review for master and journeyman electricians at Eastfield College in Mesquite, Texas. Formerly, he was an authorized construction outreach trainer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). He has been a dedicated electrician since 1961, working as licensed residential wireman, journeyman and master electrician. A New Generation

A former student called me to ask how to size a new generator for a facility. He said the calculated load would be 1200 amps at 277/480 three-phase four-wire. It would be used for supplying power when the normal electrical supply system is interrupted. This would include lighting for general illumination, for life support equipment found in operating rooms and for other electrical emergency systems necessary for safety and health of the occupants.

House Divided

While I was teaching Article 220 and particularly Parts III and IV and Sections 220.40 and 220.80, respectively, questions were raised about the differences in the two methods for service/feeder calculations. Why would the National Electrical Code seem to contradict itself by allowing two methods for these calculations?
