Leadership, determination and dedication—words that describe many IAEI members as they strive to enforce codes and protect the public. It is therefore fitting that these same words were cited in the presentation of the Canadian Standards Association Award of Merit to Stephen Douglas, C.E.I., on June 14, 2009.

Each year, contributions made by the Canadian Standards Association’s committee members to the world of standards are honoured through the presentation of the CSA Award of Merit. The CSA Award of Merit is an honour bestowed to an individual who has demonstrated leadership in developing Canadian voluntary standards and who, through technical, administrative, or special standards activities, has advanced the purpose of the Canadian Standards Association.

Stephen Douglas (Steve) represents the IAEI as a voting member of the Technical Committee on the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC), and is chair of the Subcommittees on Section 2, "General Rules”; Section 12, "Wiring Methods”; Section 40, "Electric Cranes and Hoists” and Section 68, "Pools, Tubs, and Spas.” He brings his vast experience and depth of electrical knowledge to several standards development areas at CSA, covering topics as diverse as wind turbines, wiring devices, cable management, fuel cells, distribution transformers, standby electrical power, the Objective Based Industrial Electrical Code, and the Electrical Inspection Code for Existing Residential Occupancies.

Steve works diligently to ensure that the benchmark level for electrical safety established by the Canadian Electrical Code Part I is maintained throughout all CSA electrical standards. Highly respected by his peers, Steve willingly accepts new assignments and roles, and is always prepared to help others. Apart from his own Standards work, Steve has also been recognized for ensuring that IAEI is represented on every section of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

The Canadian Standards Association is proud to recognize Steve as a strong ambassador for CSA and the consensus process in his international work with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), where he serves on the harmonized IEC CSC TC 105/CSA TC on Fuel Cells and on a working group as Canadian expert. He also plays a major role on the Task Force on the Harmonization of Ampacities, which was struck to reduce trade barriers by correlating cable and conductor ampacity requirements between the CEC and theNEC.

Steve is a past president of the IAEI Ontario chapter and the IAEI Canadian Section. He currently sits as member of the Board of Directors on the IAEI Canadian Section and the IAEI Ontario Chapter and is also a member of the IAEI International Board of Directors.
