Here are seven areas in which IAEI can help you succeed in the electrical industry. Under each area, a “Success Guide” outlines actions you can take to ensure that success.

1. On Code Issues

Your voice is vitally important. If you do not speak for your community, who will?

Success Guide:

Identify the problem.

Organize your facts and recommendations.

Write your proposal or comments, following the instructions in the back of the current Code book.

Submit to IAEI section by July 1 in the year before the code panel meetings so that it can be submitted to IAEI international office by September 1st that same year.

2. In Current Forums

Hot or controversial topics spring up frequently, topics that need your input because they affect your community, your work, and electrical safety. If you do not speak up in forums, how can you effect a change?

Success Guide:

Stay abreast of the latest developments by reading IAEI News, www.iaei.org, and IAEI on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Organize your facts and recommendations.

Post your observations or research in the discussion groups on www.iaei.org, and at IAEI on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Write an article expressing your views for IAEI News.

Become known as a wise, thoughtful and fair inspector.

3. As a Leading Authority

By virtue of your position, you are the authority. Show yourself as a leader by continuously enlarging your professional credentials and discovering new technologies. Consider publishing; it is recognized as one of the most effective ways of becoming known as a leader.

Success Guide:

Learn the latest and best practices.

Get practical advice from those with more experience than your own.

Meet every challenge you face with new solutions.

Write a white paper about your research or experiences and submit for posting on www.iaei.org.

Write an article to be published.

4. In the Industry

No career advances far beyond your connections. IAEI offers you the opportunity of making contacts and networking throughout the world. Why limit yourself to one jurisdiction?

Success Guide:

Attend as many chapter and division meetings as possible.

Make it a point to get to know active members.

Attend your own Section meeting each year and make new contacts.

Attend at least one other Section meeting each year. Before long, you will have extended your contacts immensely.

Be in constant contact with your expanding network.

5. In Career Advancement

Cardiologists often tell their patients that the only way to build a strong heart is to become active. The same advice applies to your career; become active by keeping abreast of the latest trends and codes. These actions will keep you ahead of the field.

Success Guide:

We want your opinions; rate products and services online at www.iaei.org.

Deliberately read each issue of IAEI News. Studies show that if you spend one hour each day reading in your vocation, you will become the expert in a short period of time.

Request the materials that you need. Who knows, you may be the catalyst for a new book, article, or newsletter.

If you are qualified, volunteer to teach in your area of expertise. Start at the local level and aspire to the international arena.

Your job is to ensure that electricity is used safely everywhere. As a member of IAEI, you can extend the reach of safety.

While IAEI has been focusing on meeting its priorities and responsibilities, learning delivery systems and technology have changed dramatically. So, too, have the spatial requirements for training and meeting facilities.

IAEI’s CURRENT PRIORITIES to its members, the electric industry and the public are to:

assist in the continuing development of electrical codes and standards including the National Electrical Code,

promote inspections for safety of electrical installations by qualified inspectors,

advocate for the adoption of the National Electrical Code by local jurisdictions with minimal amendments,

produce high-quality textbooks and other learning materials,

provide seminars to teach safe and code-compliant installations to members of the electrical community,

maximize professional networking opportunities through section and chapter functions, and

advocate on behalf of the inspection community.

Why is IAEI initiating a capital improvement campaign?

While IAEI has been focusing on meeting its priorities and responsibilities, learning delivery systems and technology have changed dramatically. So, too, have the spatial requirements for the training and meeting facilities, for staffing and for production. Our current facility is in need of major upgrading and repairs.

Additionally, increased demands for IAEI products and programs have taxed the association’s resources and it has not been able to keep abreast of the demands without these technological advances.

A capital improvement campaign will allow us to better serve our members and industry partners. A successful capital improvement campaign will result in the purchase of a new IO building or will upgrade the infrastructure of the current building and will incorporate green technology and energy efficiency, depending on the real estate market. This will allow IAEI to expand onsite training and to more effectively host industry meetings. Equally important, a successful capital improvement campaign will enable us to upgrade technology in order to increase production of vital publications, to implement learning delivery programs as well as to strengthen administrative functions.

How can we meet the target of $2 million?

IAEI needs support and contributions from its members through direct contributions and through its five groups: IAEI sections, chapters, divisions, individuals (members and non-members) and key industry partners. The above was provided to introduce and summarize the need and to update our membership on what planning is in the works. Keep an eye on the progress of the fundraising by clicking here. Help us fill our building with donations.

James (Jim) E. Maldonado, IAEI International Fifth Vice President, passed away suddenly on October 29, 2011.

James (Jim) E. Maldonado, IAEI International Fifth Vice President, passed away suddenly on October 29, 2011.

Born October 17, 1953 in Phoenix, Arizona, he was preceded in death by his parents Tony and LaRue. Jim is survived by his wife Corinne, five children, Brent (Terina), Brian, Carrie Skiba (Burt), Heather, Erica Hansen (Tim) and seven grandchildren.

He was a man of many talents. He worked as a plan check engineer for the city of Tempe. He served on the board of directors and was the past president of IAEI. He enjoyed spending time with family and serving others.

“It was with deep sadness when I learned of the untimely death of IAEI Board member Jim Maldonado,” writes Dave Clements, IAEI CEO and Executive Director. “Jim was a huge supporter of IAEI and his contributions to the organization have been significant. He will be greatly missed at the International level as well as within his IAEI Section and Chapter.

“Jim will be remembered for his enthusiasm and passion for public safety and ways that IAEI could fulfill his mission. He always took the opportunity to stress the importance of electrical inspections, certification for inspectors and continuing education as important and necessary components for public safety. I especially enjoyed Jim describing at last year’s executive committee meeting why IAEI should consider the education of children on the hazards of electricity, using the example of his participation in setting up an IAEI booth at a home show in the Phoenix area. I still see the enthusiasm and smile on his face as he told the story of children flocking to the booth with their parents to view a children’s safety video on electricity.

“Jim served as a director on the International Board for the past three years. At the time of his death he was 5th vice president on the executive committee and was serving on several board committees including the Long Range Planning Committee. The committee recently completed goals for a 5-year plan. Jim’s passion for public safety is reflected in many of the goals. For this and for all of his other contributions to IAEI, we will remember and miss Jim.

“He was truly a champion for the built environment and as an electrician a stalwort for our IAEI mission of electrical safety. His provoking thought, and always helpful demeanor will be sorely missed.”

Chuck Mello, outgoing international president, writes, “In my 28 years of activity with IAEI, I have known Jim for about 20 of them. While we did not always agree on every technical issue, I found Jim to be very passionate about electrical safety in general and especially about the value the electrical inspector provides to the public. It is this passion for the industry, his leadership, and also, for me, his friendship that will be missed.”
