QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants, at time of filing application, must possess the following qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; and
- One of the following training/experience patterns or equivalent:
- Five (5) years of experience as a journey person in the building construction or related trades
- Three (3) years experience as a Combination Inspector in a city or county inspection jurisdiction
- Possession of a State of California license as a general (B-1) or electrical (C-10) or plumbing (C-36) or heating, ventilating, air conditioning (C-20) contractor for a minimum of two (2) years

LICENSE(S) AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is required at time of application
Certification by the International Code Council as a Building, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical Inspector is required within two (2) years of appointment and for continued employment in this classification
Incumbents in this position are required to file a Conflict of Interest statement upon assuming office, annually and upon leaving office, in accordance with City Manger Directive 100
A medical examination will be required prior to appointment
Applicants must successfully pass a City background investigation, which may include, in the discretion of the City and/or as required by law, fingerprinting, criminal records search, credit check, DMV record check, and employment verification. Any information obtained will be used to determine eligibility for employment in accordance with the law, including but not limited to restrictions regarding employer use of arrest and/or conviction information

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: One of the following trades: carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, or electrical; other construction trades; pertinent State, and local laws, codes, and ordinances pertaining to the assigned field of inspection; proper inspection methods, procedures, and materials pertaining to assigned field of inspection; personal computers and standard business software applications; environmental and safety principles, practices, procedures and standards pertaining to assigned responsibility.
Ability to:
Detect construction, electrical, plumbing or mechanical defects and recommend corrective action; read, interpret, and explain blueprints, plans, construction drawings, and specifications; interpret and explain pertinent State, and local laws, codes, and ordinances pertaining to the assigned field of inspection; perform arithmetic computations with accuracy; deal tactfully and courteously with others; tactfully gain the cooperation and compliance of individuals and organizations; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public; work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare and maintain accurate, clear, and concise written documents such as technical reports, records, forms, and correspondence; evaluate situations, identify problems, and exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines; effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet strict deadlines; identify color and materials normally used in building construction trades; walk or stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, reach, carry, crawl, climb, and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.
Under general supervision: Inspects building construction and repair activities to insure compliance with City and State codes pertaining to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical; enforces Codes by giving instructions, written discrepancy notices, or stop work orders; reviews non-structural construction plans for compliance with City and State Codes pertaining to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical; confers with architects, contractors, builders, building designers, property owners, and the general public to explain and interpret Code requirements and restrictions; responds to office inquiries on building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical regulations; reviews plans and applications for permits; maintains records and correspondence pertaining to inspection work; prepares and writes reports; works under the general supervision of a senior inspector or other supervisor as assigned; may supervise others as assigned and assist in the training of new personnel, and performs other related duties as assigned.
