Electrical Codes
2005 National Electrical Code, effective July 1, 2005 with 2 amendments.


Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/Services & Licensing: Contractors
Electrical work in Maine requires a license. Maine issues these electrician licenses: journeyman, master and limited.

Licensing requirements:
The state does license the following:

Master Electrician AND/OR Senior Master Electrician (over 70 years of age)
A Master Electrician is an individual engaging in, or about to engage in, the business of installing electrical wires, conduits, apparatus, fixtures and other electrical equipment.
   
Requirements:

Complete at least 4,000 hours of service as a journeyman electrician or at least 12,000 hours of experience in electrical installations, as defined in section 1101, and complete a program of study comprising 576 hours as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution.

The 576 hours shall consist of 450 hours of required study, including a course of not less than 45 hours in the current National Electrical Code and 126 hours of degree-related courses.

   
Fees:

License fee: $150.00 for Master Electrician
$20.00 for Senior Master Electrician (over age 70)

Application fee: $25

Late fees: A late fee of $50.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date. Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.


     
CE Requirement: 15 Hour current National Electrical Code update every three years.
   
Reciprocity: The Electricians' Examining Board shall issue a license to any person who files a sworn application, is licensed by another state or territory of the United States that has a reciprocity agreement with the State of Maine, and who has been licensed and actively engaged in work as an electrician for a minimum of six years. The State of Maine presently has reciprocity agreements with New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont.
   
Renewal: Biannually based on first licensure date; Renewal fee: $150.00 for Master Electrician; $20.00 for Senior Master Electrician (over age 70)
 
Inactive Master Electrician
A Master Electrician can become an Inactive Master Electrician at time of renewal by paying the fee stated below.
   
Reinstatement:

An Inactive Master Electrician can reinstate his license up to three years of becoming inactive upon completion of a 15 hour current National Electrical Code update and payment of the fee. In order for an Inactive Master Electrician to reinstate his license beyond the three yeas of becoming inactive requires Board approval.

   
Renewal:

Biannually based on first licensure date; Renewal fee: $75

 
Limited Electrician AND/OR Senior Limited Electrician, (over 70 years of age)
A Limited Electrician is an individual doing work to install and service the electrical work related to a specific type of electrically operated equipment or to specific electrical installations only authorized by this license. Limited licenses are issued for the following categories: Low Energy, Gas Dispense, House Wiring, Outdoor Signs, Refrigeration, Traffic Signals, Water Pumps, and Crane Technicians.
   
Requirements:

Applicants for examination must meet the following requirements for the following examination(s):

LIMITED LICENSE TO:

WATER PUMPS
A limited electrician in water pumps shall have 135 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 2,000 hours of experience. The privileges of practice shall be restricted to electrical work between branch circuits and power supplies.

OUTDOOR SIGNS (INCLUDING SIGN LIGHTING)
A limited electrician in outdoor signs, including sign lighting shall have 135 hours of limited electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 2,000 hours of experience. The privileges of practice do not include branch circuit wiring.

GASOLINE DISPENSING
A limited electrician in gasoline dispensing shall have 135 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 2,000 hours of experience. The privileges of practice shall be restricted to electrical work between the branch circuit and the power supply.

TRAFFIC SIGNALS (INCLUDING OUTDOOR LIGHTING OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS)
A limited electrician in traffic signals, including outdoor lighting of traffic signals, shall have 135 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 2,000 hours of experience.

HOUSE WIRING
A limited electrician in house wiring shall have 225 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 4,000 hours of experience. The privileges of practice shall be restricted to one-family and two-family dwellings, including modular and mobile homes.

REFRIGERATION
A limited electrician in refrigeration shall have 270 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 6,000 hours of experience. Graduates of a Maine vocational-technical institute electrical program in refrigeration approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution shall be credited with 4,000 hours of experience upon graduation. Privileges of practice shall be restricted to all associated wire from the loadside of distribution.

LOW ENERGY
A limited electrician in low energy, including fire alarms, shall have 270 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 4,000 hours of experience. Any person having a limited license in fire alarms or experience in the installation of low-energy electronics, as defined by the National Electrical Code, prior to June 14, 1987 shall automatically be licensed as a limited electrician in low energy. (4,000 hours of experience in the installation of low-energy electronics will still have to be documented.) NOTE: The Electricians' Examining Board, at their May 2003 meeting, voted to requirea person installing low voltage landscape lighting to be licensed as a Limited to Low Energy electrician.

CRANE TECHNICIAN
A limited electrician as a crane technician shall have 135 hours of electrical education as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution and 2,000 hours of experience. Privileges of practice covers the installation of electrical equipment and wiring used in connection with cranes, monorail hoists, hoists and runways.

Any persons having experience in the installation of cranes and hoists, as defined by the National Electrical Code, prior to September 18, 1999, qualifies to be licensed as a crane technician.

License fees: $100.00 for Limited Electrician
$20.00 for Senior Limited Electrician (over age 70)

Application fee: $25.00

Journeyman Electrician and/or Senior Journeyman Electrician (over 70 years of age)
A Journeyman Electrician is an individual making electrical installations in the employment of a Master Electrician, Limited Electrician or Electrical Company.
   
Requirements:

Must pass an examination

Complete at least 8,000 hours of service as an apprentice or helper electrician or at least 8,000 hours of experience in electrical installations, as defined in section 1101, and satisfactorily complete a program of study comprising 576 hours as approved by the Electricians' Examining Board or from an accredited institution. The 576 hours shall consist of 225 hours of required study (see list below), including an approved course of not less than 45 hours in the current National Electrical Code; and 351 hours of elective study, comprised of all trade-related electives, or 135 hours of the 351 hours of elective study can be degree related; or

Be a graduate of an accredited regional vocational high school 2-year electrical program, have worked 8,000 hours in the field of electrical installations under the supervision of a master electrician or the equivalent and have completed a course of not less than 45 hours in the current National Electrical Code; or

Be a graduate of an accredited Maine vocational-technical institute electrical program, have worked 4,000 hours in the field of electrical installations under the supervision of a master electrician or the equivalent and have completed a course of not less than 45 hours in the current National Electrical Code. Persons qualifying under this paragraph may write the journeyman's examination upon graduation if application is made within one year of graduation; or

Be an electrical apprentice registered with the Maine State Apprenticeship and Training Council and have completed 576 hours of related instruction, as defined in this paragraph, prescribed in their apprentice program, the 8,000-hour approved work hours and a course of not less than 45 hours in the current National Electrical Code. Persons qualifying under this paragraph may write the journeyman's examination after completion of 576 hours of instruction, if application is made within one year of the completion of the instruction.

License fee: $80 for Journeyman Electrician
$20 for Senior Journeyman Electrician (over age 70)

Application fee: $25.00

Late fees: A late fee of $50.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date. Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.

Electrical Company
An Electrical Company means a person, firm, corporation or partnership employing licensees engaged in the business of doing electrical installations. A Company license must be validated by an employee or officer of the company holding a current master or limited electrical license. A limited licensee may validate only a company license making installations specific to the limited license.

Apprentice Electrician
An Apprentice Electrician is a person who is engaged in a written agreement to work at and learn the trade of an electrician under the direct supervision of a master, journeyman or limited electrician..

License fee: $20

Application fee: $25.00

Criminal background check: $15

Late fees: Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.

 
 
     
Renewal: Biannually based on first licensure date; Renewal fee: $20
 
Helper Electrician and/or Senior Helper Electrician
A Helper Electrician is a person making electrical installations in the employment of a master electrician, limited electrician or electrical company and under the direct supervision of a master, journeyman or limited electrician.
   
Requirements:

Must complete an application

License fee: $20

Application fee: $25.00

Criminal background check fee: $15

Late fees: A late fee of $10.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date. Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.

Journeyman-In-Training Electrician
A Journeyman-in-Training Electrician is a person making electrical installations in the employment of a master electrician, limited electrician or electrical company and under the supervision of a journeyman, limited or master electrician.
   
Requirements:

A Journeyman-in-Training must be a graduate of an accredited Maine technical college or Department of Corrections electrical program, receive a passing grade on the journeyman examination and complete 2,000 hours of experience.

   
Fees:

License fee: $80

Application fee: $25.00

Criminal background check fee: $15

Late fees: A late fee of $50.00 is assessed for licenses renewed after the license expiration date. Any person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the expiration date shall be subject to all requirements governing new applicants.
