Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/Services & Licensing: Contractors
All electrical installations, including new jobs and additional work on old installations, made in this state, must have an electrical wiring certificate properly executed by the master or class B electrician supervising the installation of electrical wiring. The state electrical board shall prescribe such form, and shall have on hand a supply of such certificates for distribution to master and class B electricians. Such certificate must consist of the original and five copies.
This section does not apply to an inspector employed by the electrical board or a political subdivision as of July 2, 1989.

Licensing requirements:
| Master Electrician |
| “Master electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to plan, lay out, and supervise the installation and repair of electrical wiring apparatus, and equipment for electric light, heat, and power in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work. |

Five years experience, one year of which must be as a journeyman electrician
Must pass a written examination
Before entering into a contract agreement or undertaking with another for the installation of electrical wiring or installation of electrical parts of other apparatus, a master electrician shall execute and deposit with the board an undertaking in the sum of five thousand dollars for a master electrician conditioned on the faithful performance of all electrical work undertaken by the electrician. In addition, a deposit must be made with the board in the amount of fifty dollars by a master electrician in lieu of a surety bond.

| Journeyman Electrician |
| “Journeyman electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work. |

| Requirements: |
Four years experience (8000 hours total, maximum 2000 hours per year) registered as an apprentice electrician (of which up to eighteen months may apply under the qualifications of a class B electrician) under the supervision of a contracting master licensed electrician in an area where electrical construction work is done in the jurisdiction regulating similar rules of the state of North Dakota. One year’s credit will be granted for a graduate of a two-year electrical school approved by the state electrical board.

| Class B Electrician |
| “Class B electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, and technical knowledge to wire, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment in accordance with the standard rules and regulations governing such work, and shall have eighteen months' experience in farmstead or residential wiring, and shall have passed an examination before the state electrical board based upon the national electrical code as it applies to farmstead or residential wiring. |

| Requirements: |
Shall have eighteen months’ experience in farmstead or residential wiring under the supervision of a master or class B electrician. Six months’ credit will be granted for a graduate of a two-year electrical school approved by the state electrical board.
Must pass a written examination
Before entering into a contract agreement or undertaking with another for the installation of electrical wiring or installation of electrical parts of other apparatus, a class B electrician shall execute and deposit with the board an undertaking in the sum of four thousand dollars for a class B electrician conditioned on the faithful performance of all electrical work undertaken by the electrician. In addition, a deposit must be made with the board in the amount of forty dollars by a class B electrician, in lieu of a surety bond. |

| Apprentice |
"Apprentice electrician” means a person learning the trade under the personal supervision of a state-licensed electrician.
There are two categories of apprentice electricians and here are the qualifications required for each to apply for examination:

Apprentice electricians under the joint apprenticeship training committee training program approved by the department of labor.
Electrician trainees who may not be eligible for the joint apprenticeship training committee program and other persons desiring to accumulate a sufficient time and capability in the electrical trade to qualify them to apply for permission to take the examination for journeyman electrician's license.
Registration is required within 6 months of employment.
Person may work as an apprentice under a licensed master or class B electrician, but the master or class B electrician may not allow an apprentice to work on any installation without direct constant supervision by a North Dakota licensed electrician working with the apprentice at the worksite. Licensed electricians may supervise not more than three apprentices. |

CE Requirements
After March 31, 1990, each applicant for renewal of an electrician's license pursuant to section 43-09-15 must have successfully completed prior thereto at least four hours, and thereafter eight hours each biennium, of continuing education relating to the standards set forth in section 43-09-21 or as otherwise prescribed by the board. The board may not require more than sixteen hours of continuing education in each biennium. The board shall conduct education sessions for licensees each year at not less than six locations throughout the state. Attendance at such sessions, or attendance at other education sessions certified by the board as approved, fulfills the educational requirements of this section. The board may charge a fee to licensees for attendance at the education sessions at an amount to be determined by the board, but not to exceed ten dollars per person for each session.
Reciprocates
The N.D. State Electrical Board reciprocates Master and Journeyman licenses with Minnesota and South Dakota. On Journeyman licenses only, we reciprocate with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
