Electrical Codes
The State of New Mexico has announced adoption of the 2008 Edition of the National Electrical CodeĀ®, under Title 14, Chapter 10, effective on July 1, 2008.

Licensing: Electrical Inspectors/Services & Licensing: Contractors
All new, altered, or extensively repaired electrical installations are subject to inspection by state or municipal inspectors.

Licensing requirements:
All electrical contractors and journeyman electricians must be licensed by the Construction Industries Division (CID).

Electrical Contractor
Electrical contractors are issued a certificate of competence by the Construction Industries Division.
 
Requirements:

Applications must demonstrate proof of financial responsibility; not have engaged in illegal contracting activity in New Mexico within one year prior to making application; demonstrate familiarity with rules, regulations, and codes; satisfy residency requirements if applicable; submit proof of registration with the taxation and revenue department; and demonstrate four years practical trade expeirience specifically related to the type of construction for which application is being mjade.

Classification types:

Types of certificates are as follows:

  • ER-1 Residential
  • EE-98 Electrical (includes ER-1, ES Classification)
  • EL-1 Electrical Distribution Systems including Transmission Lines
  • ES-1 Electrical Signs/Outline Lighting
  • ES-2 Cathodic Protection and Lightning Protection
  • ES-3 Sound and Intercommunication and Electrical Alarm Systems
  • ES-7 Telephone Communications Systems
 

 

Fees:

$25 per year for each classification held

     
Renewal: Annual renewal; Renewal fee: $25 for each classification held
 
Journeyman Electrician
Journeyman electricians are issued a certificate of competence by the Construction Industries Division.
 
Requirements:

Must demonstrate four years experience as an apprentice electrician or the equivalent.

   
Classification types:

Types of certificates are as follows:

  • EE-98J Electrical (includes all ESJ Specialties)
  • EL-1J Electrical Distribution Systems, including Transmission Lines
  • ES-1J Electrical Signs and Outline Lighting
  • ES-2J Cathodic Protection and Lightning Protection
  • ES-3J Sound and Intercommunication and Electrical Alarm Systems
  • ER-1 Residential
  • ES-7J Telephone Communication Lines
 

 

Fees:

$25 per year for each classification held

     
Reciprocity:

The current members of the Multi State Reciprocal Electrical Licensing Group are: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Requirements for reciprocity. Applicants for a New Mexico reciprocal journeyman certificate of competence must:

  • hold a journeyman electrician certificate/license from a participating state that is current, active and in good standing, and
  • complete the application process for a New Mexico journeyman certificate, by submitting an application and a copy of their member-state qualifying journeyman certificate/license, and paying the applicable fee.
     
CE Requirements: During the 2003 Legislative Session, the New Mexico Legislature enacted House Bill 279 which requires that journeymen complete at least sixteen (16) hours of continuing education every three-years. This requirement serves to ensure regular training on the National Electrical Code, a code that is regularly updated every three years. Eight (8) hours of the required training is on code change instructions and eight (8) hours is on other industry-related instruction.
     
Renewal: Annual renewal; Renewal fee: $25 for each classification held
