Electrical Codes
The State of West Virginia has adopted the 2005 edition of the National Electrical Code. The 2005 NEC will be affective May 15, 2006.

State law requires all communities to adopt the State minimum. West Virginia adopts the International Residential Code without the electrical section deferring to the NEC.

Licensing requirements:

Electrical Inspectors
"Certified electrical inspector" means a person who is certified by the state fire marshal as qualified to perform electrical inspectors. "Electrical inspector" does not inclue an inspector employed by the miners' health, safety, and training pursuant to the provisions of section eleven, article one, chapter twenty-two-a of this code.
   
Requirements:

No electrical inspections may be performed, offered or engaged in for compensation or hire within the state of West Virginia by any person who is not certified.

 
Class A Electrical Inspector (Certification)
This classification authorizes the electrical inspector to perform electrical inspections on one- and two-family dwellings only.
   
Requirements:

Shall possess a valid and current master's electrician license issued by the state fire marshal

Pass Test 2A Electrical One- and Two-Family Dwelling exam by NCPCCI

Proof of professional liability insurance (errors and omissions) in the amount of not less than 250,000 dollars.

   
Fees:

Certification fee: $50

Application fee: $25

   
CE Requirement: Completion of three (3) CE units as defined by the West Virginia Department of Education every three years.
   
Renewal: Annually; Renewal fee: $100
   
Class B Electrical Inspector (Certification)
This classification authorizes the electrical inspector to perform electrical inspections on all structures including but not limited to one and two-family dwellings.
   
Requirements:

Shall possess a valid and current master's electrician license issued by the state fire marshal

Pass Test 2A Electrical One- and Two-Family Dwelling and Test 2B Electrical General exam by NCPCCI

Proof of professional liability insurance (errors and omissions) in the amount of not less than 250,000 dollars.

   
Fees:

Certification fee: $50

Application fee: $25

   
CE Requirement: Completion of three (3) CE units as defined by the West Virginia Department of Education every three years.

Class C Electrical Inspector (Certification)
This classification authorizes the electrical inspector to perform electrical plan reviews and perform electrical inspections on all structures including but not limited to one- and two-family dwellings.
   
Requirements:

Shall possess a valid and current master's electrician license issued by the state fire marshal

Pass Test 2C Electrical Plan Review, Test 2A Electrical One- and Two-family Dwelling, and Test 2B Electrical General exam by NCPCCI

Proof of professional liability insurance (errors and omissions) in the amount of not less than 250,000 dollars.

Apprentice
Helper—cannot perform electrical work without supervision by a journeyman or master
   
Requirements:

18 years of age

Must take open book exam

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $10

   
Journeyman
Able to perform all types of electrical work (including HVAC, low-voltage, etc.) except for design, lay out. May supervise up to three apprentice electricians on the job site.
   
Requirements:

Completed 1080 hour approved electrical vocational program, OR US Department of Labor-approved electrical apprenticeship program, OR

Four years/8,000 hours hands on electrical work experience

Must take open book exam on the NEC.

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25

License fee: $50

   
Renewal: Annually; Renewal fee: $50
   
Master
Able to perform all types of electrical work including low voltage, HVAC, etc. Able to do electrical system design lay out. May supervise up to three apprentice electricians on the job site.
   
Requirements:

Five years/10,000 hours hands on electrical work experience.

Must document some residential, some industrial, and some commercial work.

Must take open book exam on the NEC.

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25

License fee: $50

   
Renewal: Annually; Renewal fee: $50
   
HVAC Electrician
Able to install, maintain, or repair only wiring that is directly related to plumbing, heating, and air conditioning equipment not to exceed 600 volts.
   
Requirements:

Two years/4,000 hours hands on work experience in HVAC wiring. One year may be obtained through educational program.

Must take open book exam on NEC pertaining to HVAC.

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25

   
Electric Sign Electrician
Able to install, maintain, or repair only wiring that is directly related to electrical signs and is electrically isolated from the building wiring system.
   
Requirements:

Two years/4,000 hours hands on experience in electric sign wiring. One year may be obtained through educational program.

Must take open book exam on NEC pertaining to electric signs

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25

   
Single Family Dwelling Electrician
Able to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring or devices in or on a single family residential dwelling.
   
Requirements:

Two years/4,000 hours hands on work experience in residential wiring. One year must be obtained through educational program.

No exam.

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25

   
Low Voltage - Fire & Burglar Alarm System Electrician
Able to install, maintain or repair only low-voltage wiring (80 volts or less)
   
Requirements:

Two years/4,000 hours hands on work experience in low voltage wiring. One year may be obtained through educational program

Open book exam taken from NFPA 70 and 72

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25

   
Elevator Electrician
Able to install, maintain or repair electric wiring that is directly related to elevators and is electrically isolated from the building wiring system
   
Requirements:

Two years/4,000 hours hands on work experience in elevator wiring. One year may be obtained through educational program.

No exam.

   
Fees:

Exam fee: $25
