Photovoltaic Power Systems and The National Electrical Code

Over 150 metawatts of PV modules are being produced worldwide annually and these PV modules, when exposed to sunlight, will be generating electricity for the next thirty years and longer. These systems are either utility-interactive or they provide power for lights, water pumps, appliances, and communications equipment in stand-alone applications.

 
What Changed in Article 690?

The Task Group proposed 57 changes to Article 690 and all the changes were accepted in the review process. The performance and cost of PV installations was always a consideration as these changes were formed, but safety was the number one priority.

For those of us who have been using the NEC for a number of years, when looking at the 1999 edition, we see a whole new document. This will be a cycle of relearning what we already know. Along with the changes is the relocation of a lot of existing information. It would be impossible to explain all of the rework and changes in Article 240 in just one short article. It is my recommendation that you check the IAEI News for a seminar in your area and attend it.
