Quick Fact: The Construction Codes and Licensing Division (CCLD) was created in 2005 with the consolidation of seven construction-related state programs. Minnesota is one of the states that typically adopt on a three-year code cycle and are likely to adopt the NEC-2020 later this year. (Send us an update):


License Renewal & CEU Requirements

Master Electrician/Contractor

HOURS REQUIRED:  16
CODE-RELATED: 12
RENEWAL CYCLE: Biennial

RENEWAL DATE: 3/31 
 
Units of timeContact Hours. Of the 16 hours required for renewal, 8 must be related to the National Electrical Code. Four hours may be related to other topics.

Journeyman Electrician

HOURS REQUIRED:  16
CODE-RELATED: 12
RENEWAL CYCLE: Biennial 

RENEWAL DATE: Licensure date
 
Units of time — Contact Hours. Of the 16 hours required for renewal, 8 must be related to the National Electrical Code. Four hours may be related to other topics.

Reciprocates — The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry has reciprocal agreements with Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota for both master and journeyman licenses. For journeyman licenses only, the department has reciprocal agreements with Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. If an individual has received a journeyman electrician license by examination, with a score of at least 75 and held that license for at least one year, they may apply for a reciprocal license. Upon verification and payment of the application fee, a Minnesota journeyman license may be issued without examination
